Position Summary

The Parent Mentor Coordinator is a culturally-responsive staff member who implements the day-to-day functioning of the Parent Mentor Program at St. Stephen’s Youth Programs. The Parent Mentor Coordinator recruits, builds relationships with, and coaches Parent Mentors at their assigned school. They are also the first point of contact for teachers and administrators at the school. They work with the Director of Family Engagement, the Family Organizer, and the Director of Organizing to involve Parent Mentors in family engagement and organizing campaigns.

Duties & Responsibilities

LEADERSHIP: RELATIONSHIP-BUILDING AND COMMUNICATION

  • Recruiting Parent Mentors at back-to-school events, before and after school, and through flyering and/or phone banking

  • Interviewing and selecting Parent Mentors

  • Setting up “one-on-ones” with teachers, Parent Mentors, and community organization staff

  • Listening to Parent Mentors and encouraging/supporting them in their experience in the classroom and as part of the cohort.

  • Supporting Parent Mentors in working towards their personal goals, and connecting them to career pathways opportunities

  • Building relationships with school parents beyond the Parent Mentor cohort

  • Building Relationships with elected officials

  • Resolving conflicts as they arise

  • Participating in weekly Parent Mentor Coordinator Team meetings and individual supervision with the Director of Family Engagement 

  • Meeting with the Principal and/or Family Liaison for updates

  • Attending SPC and SSC meetings and reminding Parent Mentors to attend

  • Attending meetings or workshops with teachers (minimum requirement: the initial meet-and-greet, monthly check-ins, and final graduation)

ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT: DAY-TO-DAY PROGRAM OVERSIGHT

  • Leading parts of initial training and weekly Friday workshops

  • Making sure Parent Mentors are on time at their assigned classrooms and completing timesheets

  • Observing each Parent Mentor at least once a week

  • Making sure Parent Mentors attend the weekly Friday workshop

  • Communicating with teachers if a Parent Mentor is absent and coordinate substitute

  • Checking in with a Parent Mentor who is absent to find out what is going on, listen, and problem solve if possible

  • Checking with teachers at least monthly to see how the Parents Mentors are doing

ORGANIZATION: ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES

  • Making sure Parent Mentor files are up to date and kept securely in SSYP’s office

  • Checking timesheets daily, collecting them weekly, and giving them to the Director of Family Engagement

  • Administering Parent Mentor and Teacher Mentor surveys

ACTION: PLANNING AND ORGANIZING

  • Planning at least one “parent-led event” that engages at least 20 additional school parents

  • Helping to plan and coordinate other school and/or community projects, initiatives, and campaigns that Parent Mentors decide to take on

  • Working with SSYP’s Family Organizer to make phone calls inviting Parent Mentors to Tuesday evening Organizing meetings and attending all meetings

  • Attending SSYP’s Action Committee meetings

  • Support SSYP’s organizing campaigns as needed

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Proficiency in English and Spanish preferred.

  • Minimum 1 year as a Parent Mentor, community organizer or comparable experience required.

  • Ability to use Google Suite required.

  • Some flexibility in schedule to work during the day and attend evening meetings.

  • Parent or caregiver of Boston Public Schools student preferred.

  • Ability to work on a team, as well as to form and lead a team.

  • Ability to take initiative and act creatively.

  • Ability to learn from experience  and to implement  feedback promptly.

  • Ability to overcome obstacles and persevere.

  • Ability to work and thrive in a fast-paced, active environment with a consistently positive, can-do attitude.
