Deputy Director of Youth Development

Organizational Overview 

St. Stephen’s Youth Programs is a provider of year-round out-of-school time academic and enrichment programming, youth and parent leadership development and community organizing training. Our mission is to promote equity in education, employment and opportunity through long-term relationships with young people, their families and their communities. Founded in 2000, St. Stephen’s Youth Programs has grown to serve more than 400 children and teens annually in up to four Boston neighborhoods with a budget of $2 million. Our year-round sites are located at 419 Shawmut Avenue in the South End of Boston and at 31 Lenox Street in Lower Roxbury. We typically add an additional site or two for our summer program

Position Overview 

SSYP seeks to add a Deputy Director of Youth Development which is a executive level position is to provide operational and programmatic oversight to the development and day-to-day operations of the elementary (LEARN) and middle school programs (YLC), Junior Counselor in Training Programs, Teen Employment Program, College and Career Program and Alumni Initiative. This is a 40-hour per week position which reports to the Executive Director.

Duties and Responsibilities

Leadership, Planning and Evaluation

  • Recruit, train, schedule, evaluate and supervise staff running programming for youth ages 6-19

  • Support Academic Night for teen staff.

  • Manage annual budget for two programs.

  • Oversee all BRIDGE teen trips, including recruitment, logistics, fundraising, and content.

  • Recruit, hire, and process paperwork for 100+ teen staff each summer

  • Oversee payroll for 100 + teen staff.

  • Maintain partnerships with local colleges, organizations, and neighborhood association’s (Boston College PULSE program, Northeastern service-learning courses, Boston Community Pediatrics, Barbara C. Harris camp Blackstone Franklin Square Association) Manage partnership with Boston Afterschool and Beyond

  • Evaluate data, create and carry out interventions.

  • Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of the position.

  • Serve as the liaison between direct service program needs and executive team planning.

  • Schedule and facilitate staff meetings including TGIM (Monday all-staff meetings), MO meetings, and Director’s meetings.

  • Manage the MO meeting schedule, coordinate outside trainers and support internal workshop development and facilitation.

  • Support the academic and enrichment team in creating program content, forming partnerships with outside organizations, bringing in enrichment opportunities.

  • Oversee all program measurement and evaluations, including being the point person for partnership with Boston Afterschool and Beyond, coordinating the use of evaluation tools and analyzing data.

  • Maintain BASB Observer Certification to connect with and observe similar programs in the network and exchange feedback.

  • Manage academic and enrichment task force report cards.

Finance and Budgeting

  • Process invoices for LEARN and YLC partners and programming.

  • Develop program budgets with Director of Budget and Finance

  • Earned income: Develop tuition rates and support staff in meeting collection goals.

  • Fundraising support: Attend development meetings; support site visits, and provide info for grants, speak about the program with donors/funders when needed.

  • Coordinate with Director of Operations on program purchasing needs and purchase planning.

Staff Management and Training

  • Year-round staffing plan development with Executive Director and Director of Budget and Finance

  • Manage all job posting inquiries and interview and hire staff for all youth program positions.

  • Create training schedules and training content (week-long intensives and daily Lead counselor blocks).

  • Manage the MO meeting schedule, coordinate outside trainers and support internal workshop development and facilitation, including designing and running a portion of them.

  • Find professional development opportunities for staff and incentives for participation.

  • Supervise the Director of Social and Emotional Support, Director of Enrichment and Education, Social Worker, and Director of Elementary, Middle, and High school Programs.

Miscellaneous

  • Oversee building organizational systems and workspaces at 419 Shawmut & 31 Lenox

  • Support running the SSYP’s social media in partnership with Associate Director of Development & Communication

  • Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of the position.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a field related to Education and Youth Development, Master’s Degree preferred,

Work Experience

  • Design, implement, and evaluate programs, policies, and procedures for out of school programs and licensed day camps

  • Develops new initiatives and innovative program curriculum with clear goals, outcomes, and deliverables in program areas of Education, Performing Arts, Recreation, Enrichment, and Social Emotional Learning

  • Develop budgets for program operations.

  • Recruit, train, schedule, evaluate and support direct reports.

  • Director and lead license summer day camp ensuring all state regulations and compliances

  • Prepares detailed reports of program development progress.

  • Manage university/college and community partnerships.

  • Conduct weekly group and individual trainings and meetings with program.

Qualifications

  • The ability to supervise a professional staff consisting of individuals with varying experience, competency and cultural backgrounds.

  • Must have the ability to conduct workshops on a variety of education related topics.

  • Must have or acquire within the first 30 days of employment a First Aid & CPR certification.

  • Have excellent computer skills and competency with software such as Microsoft Office

  • Applications and/or appropriate desktop applications and hardware such as computers, printers, projectors, and smart boards.

  • High level of confidentiality, discretion, and judgment.

  • Must be able to read, write and communicate in English and willing to grow in areas.

  • of other languages such as Spanish, Mandarin, Cape Verdean Creole, and/or Haitian Creole language skills helpful

  • Must be willing to work evenings and some weekends as required.

  • Ability to work and thrive in a fast-paced, active environment with a can-do attitude.

  • Ability to recognize and address issues early on and take initiative to solve problems.

  • Ability to manage details with accuracy, especially as related to compliance with the agency’s payroll and HR systems.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects effectively and to meet deadlines.

  • Ability to supervise teen staff and hold teen staff accountable for job performances and training opportunities.

  • Ability to use and learn Boston After School & Beyond database and other youth development success measurements.

Compensation and Schedule

Hours per week: 40

Annual salary: $75,000 - $85,000 plus benefits, including health and dental and a generous vacation package.
