Program Description

St. Stephen's Youth Programs (SSYP) is an afterschool and summer academic and enrichment program for young people from first grade through high school. The goal of the program is to build a community where all people feel safe, feel big, and feel connected. During the summer, SSYP runs programs in the following neighborhoods:

  • South End (elementary students) - double site

  • Lower Roxbury (middle school students)*

Each site includes academic enrichment, Social and Emotional Support (SES), health & wellness, visual and performing art workshops; science activities; recreational activities; celebratory events; and many field trips. A healthy breakfast, lunch, and snack is served each day. While based in Episcopal churches, SSYP has no required religious component for staff or youth.

For high school youth, SSYP runs a CIT (Counselor-in-Training) program that is a paid job and includes trainings on employment skills, college readiness, healthy relationships, financial literacy, and life skills. There are about 20-25 CITs at each site.

SES Manager Position Description

SSYP is hiring an SES (Social and Emotional Support) Managers. SES Program Managers support B-SAFE in providing in-person social and emotional support and programming for groups of up to 15 youth participants at a time. SES Program Managers are responsible for adapting and adding to the curriculum and implementing it for multiple ages and abilities. This position reports to the Director of SES.

A good candidate for this position would have:

  • Ability to manage a group, and to teach and support a range of grade levels.

  • Ability to teach, support, and nurture children with particular social and emotional challenges.

  • Ability to communicate proactively about both what is going well with SES in program and where obstacles are encountered.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, active environment with a consistently positive, can-do attitude.

  • Ability to recognize and address issues early on and take initiative to solve problems.

  • Ability to contribute to the maintenance of order and neatness in a job setting.

  • Ability to report accomplishments and challenges promptly and in various formats

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Create and implement B-SAFE curriculum in social and emotional support for multiple age groups.

  • Engage students in feeling socially and emotionally supported through creating a safe and enriching environment, both in person and virtually.

  • Work with other staff to ensure that social and emotional needs of each student are being met to B-SAFE standards.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Counseling or Social Work bachelor’s or master’s degree preferred but not required.

  • Experience working with BIPOC (Black, indigenous, people of color) youth living in a city is required.

  • Previous experience in providing social and emotional support in a youth program setting is required.

  • Ability to work extremely well on a team

  • Excellent communication skills, including written and spoken communication with a wide variety of people

  • High level of attention to detail, ability to meet deadlines, can-do attitude, flexibility, and sense of humor

  • Spanish language skills preferred

KEY DATES

  • Training: Late June (exact dates to be announced)

  • Program: Wednesday, July 5th - Thursday, August 4th

Days/Hours: Monday - Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm

Compensation: $214 per day
