B-SAFE Lead Counselor
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
St. Stephen's Youth Programs (SSYP) is an afterschool and summer academic and enrichment program for young people from first grade through high school. The goal of the program is to build a community where all people feel safe, feel big, and feel connected. During B-SAFE 2023, SSYP will run program in the following neighborhoods:
South End (elementary students) - double site
Lower Roxbury (middle school students)*
Each site includes academic enrichment, Social and Emotional Support (SES), health & wellness, visual and performing art workshops; science activities; recreational activities; celebratory events; and many field trips. A healthy breakfast, lunch, and snack is served each day. While based in Episcopal churches, SSYP has no required religious component for staff or youth.
For high school youth, SSYP runs a CIT (Counselor-in-Training) program that is a paid job and includes trainings on employment skills, college readiness, healthy relationships, financial literacy, and life skills. There are about 20-25 CITs at each site.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
We are seeking a Lead Counselor to support a group of approximately 12-15 elementary or middle school students at one of our summer locations. With support from the Site Manager and other staff, they supervise and sometimes lead activities. They assist kids with their academic work, art and technical projects and participate in enrichment activities such as singing, recreational games, cooking classes, yoga, field trips, and build a sense of community to keep students safe.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Creates a space where youth feel safe, feel big, and feel connected.
Ensures safety of all children and staff.
Supervises, with support, a group of approximately 12-15 young people throughout the day, ensuring that the young people are safe and well cared for at all times.
Manages 2-3 teen staff, providing clear direction and supervision so they can best support the group.
Participates in all staff trainings and required meetings.
Works with other staff to ensure that program space is clean and safe.
Prepares the site for program, including meeting with key site hosts and other projects as needed.
Completes required reporting and evaluation tools and adapts programming based on results and feedback.
Implements the planned programming elements with the group, leading the young people through the daily schedule of activities.
Communicates with other staff, including Site Managers, Teaching Specialists, and Teen Program Supervisor to ensure that program is being carried out in accordance with B-SAFE standards.
Can be in-person Monday-Friday from 8:00am to 4:30pm every day.
QUALIFICATIONS
High School Diploma or equivalent certification.
Spanish, Mandarin, Cape Verdean Creole, and/or Haitian Creole language skills helpful.
Significant experience in leading urban youth programming required.
Significant administrative experience preferred.
Previous experience with the B-SAFE or B-READY program helpful.
Teaching experience / familiarity with the Boston Public Schools helpful.
Ability to manage a classroom, and to teach a range of grade levels.
Ability to work and thrive in a fast-paced, active environment with a consistently positive, can-do attitude.
Ability to recognize and address issues early on and take initiative to solve problems.
Ability to manage details with accuracy.
Ability to manage multiple projects effectively and to meet deadlines.
Ability to communicate clearly, effectively, and frequently with other staff.
KEY DATES
Training: Late June (exact dates to be announced)
Program: Wednesday, July 5th - Thursday, August 4th
Days/Hours: Monday - Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm
Compensation: $150.50 per day ($17.50 per hour)
