AmeriCorps Ambassador of Mentoring
Mass Mentoring Partnership AmeriCorps Ambassadors of Mentoring support mentoring across the
Commonwealth to improve positive outcomes for youth by building capacity in key program areas such
as mentor recruitment, screening, and training. Projects focus on developing new or strengthening
current mentoring programming to serve youth ages 7-24.
Mass Mentoring Partnership (MMP) is fueling the movement to expand empowering youth-adult
relationships to meet the needs of communities across Massachusetts. MMP serves more than 370
programs statewide, supporting over 30,000 youth in quality relationships.
Position Description:
The Coordinator of Elementary Mentoring at SSYP will serve on a team of mentoring coordinators, each
focused on one age cohort, and will expand and improve SSYP’s current mentoring efforts. The AOM will
recruit, train, coach, and support all mentors working with our 80 elementary schoolers. By coordinating
and supporting the 40+ mentors, the AOM will increase the number of trained mentors serving in the
elementary program. The AOM will also work directly with one group of 15 elementary schoolers and
their mentors in the afterschool program.
The AOM will
●increase the circle of caring adults in the life of each elementary school student in SSYP
●create program activities to foster trust and relationship-building skills for elementary schoolers
and their mentors
●help young people, with their mentors, build essential academic skills that will support their
success as learners
●help young people, with their mentors, build essential leadership skills that will prepare them to
take action as neighborhood leaders.
●ensure that all elementary youth have access to age- and developmentally-appropriate
mentorship that supports their development of academic, professional, and organizational skills
and builds the hope and imagination that will lead to full and successful lives.
●model excellent mentoring through their own work with 15 elementary schoolers
Project Responsibilities
Coordinate volunteers to increase the number of trained mentors in SSYP’s elementary program
Actively use and improve the volunteer database, tracking all year-long volunteers.
Manage existing elementary program partnerships with colleges, neighborhood associations, and volunteer organizations to ensure steady mentor recruitment.
Develop and adapt mentor training curriculum to ensure all mentors have ongoing, age- and developmentally-appropriate training and support.
●Create programs, trainings, and activities that foster healthy adult-youth relationships and
support the ongoing development of mentoring pairs and groups.
○Plan and implement age- and developmentally-appropriate activities, events, and trips
for elementary program youth and their mentors to engage in together.
○Foster the relationship of 1:1 pairs and small group mentoring cohorts by creating
individualized success plans.
○Increase partnerships throughout Boston to expand opportunities for mentor activities.
●Implement and improve mentor recruitment, matching, training, coaching, tracking, and
affirming process
○Participate in recruitment fairs and build partnerships to reach a diverse group of
mentor candidates.
○Design thoughtful matching and placement process for new mentors.
●Work directly with a group of 15 elementary schoolers and their mentors each afternoon
○apply lessons learned from own experiences of working with youth to the overall
elementary mentoring program
●Commute to monthly corps-wide trainings and events
●Complete all required monthly AAoM documentation, including evaluation reports and
timesheets
Qualifications:

▪Ability to plan, execute and document site-based group activities and off-site field trips

▪Ability to work occasional evenings
▪Must be a U.S. citizen, national, or legal permanent resident
▪Must be willing to undergo a National Service Criminal History Check, including
screenings through the National Sex Offender Public Website, a name-based search of
the statewide criminal history registry and a fingerprint based FBI check. *Eligibility to
participate in the AAoM program is contingent on the results of this screening
▪BA/BS strongly preferred or equivalent experience
▪A passion for volunteerism and community service
Position Benefits
For an eleven month, full-time commitment and 1,700 hours of AmeriCorps service Fellows
receive:
▪Annual stipend of up to $16,000 (for second year senior AmeriCorps Ambassador of
Mentoring)
